In 1997 two P5 classes started a Comenius Project looking at the environment around the school. The children were given a 'message from the stars'. This led to wide of class work involving surveys, maps, graphs and artwork.
One result was a fabulous tape/slide show which was shown to other classes, and a meeting attended by over 100 parents, City Development officials and local councillors (one each from Labour, Liberal and Conservative parties). This introduced the idea of the vicious circle . A revised version was performed at the Lothian Safe Routes Conference in March 1999.
A report of the children's findings and list of suggestion was handed to Councillor Moyra Forrest who is the councillor for the ward where the school is. (More about the Sciennes area).
At the same time as the Comenius Project began, a group of parents and the P5 teachers got together to begin the Safe Routes to School at Sciennes group which established a list of aims and objectives.
In May ('98) the school held a very successful Walk to School Week. In June ('98) a wonderful ride to Spylaw Park was organised as an out of school activity by parents - with the support of the school. The school had a new Head Teacher (Lindsey Robertson) who was 'persuaded' to take part. She had to be lent a bike as she hadn't cycled for over 20 years!
She has since bought her own bike and is an enthusiastic supporter of 'Safe Routes' put it firmly on the school's curriculum.
Experience at the school with very young children cycling (on the pavement) led to the creation of the Edinburgh Rack
