 Craigmillar Primary School
First cycle ride to Portobello 25.9.98. Ride 27.11.98. Ride 19.2.99.

CPS is in Craigmillar ward - Councillor John O'Donnell

Craigmillar Primary School closed on the 17th of December 1999. Redevelopment in the area has meant a loss of population and therefore significant reduction in the number of children attending.

After the new year many of the children will move to nearby Peffer Mill and cycle related activities will continue.

For a year and a half acting head teacher, Mrs. Galashan, worked closely with Lothian Safe Routes to encourage children to cycle. Initially this meant checking that bikes were safe and teaching basic maintenance.

Craigmillar is in one of the poorest parts of Edinburgh, but it is significant that just as many children have bikes as in more affluent areas. Surveys throughout the UK show that 80-90% of children have bikes. In 'more deprived' areas children generally have older, cheaper and, often, less well maintained bikes.

The school is close to the Innocent Railway Path and also surrounded by a number of quiet roads.

During Environment Week 1998 Primary 5,6 & 7 had a Bike Clinic to prepare them for the school's first mass cycle ride.

Other rides took them to Duddingston, The People's Story and Musselburgh. - twice!

The school has now started a Cycle Club. Its first ride was a sunny day in February
